This topic explores how assets are divided among halachic heirs, how inheritance operates in modern financial realities, and how Torah law interfaces with contemporary legal structures.
The limud is structured across four major sections. The opening segment examines the order of inheritance, including the status of a bechor, division of investments, and the treatment of assets such as life insurance. Subsequent sections address changing beneficiaries, analyzing whether and how one may allocate portions of an estate to daughters, tzedakah, or others outside the standard seder hayerusha.
Later units focus on laws, customs, and enactments, including community takanos, contractual arrangements that diverge from classic inheritance rules, and situations where secular law conflicts with halacha. The final section addresses practical estate planning, exploring the halachic validity of secular wills, drafting documents that are binding both legally and halachically, and questions surrounding parental intent and family obligations when no will exists. | | | | In Lakewood, a new chabura has opened at Rabbi Laser Levine's yeshiva for working bachurim.
