Subject: [chicago-aneinu] Please Say your Tehillim on Shabbos - Message

BS"D

Dear Aneinu Members,

This week saw yet another unspeakable tragedy in Klal Yisroel, with the shocking murder of Shmuel Silverberg z"l, a young bochur in the Denver Yeshiva. Shmuli was innocently standing in front of the yeshiva when 5 young men drove up and senselessly shot him. Our hearts grieve for his family. Their pain is unimaginable.

Our world seems to be spinning out of control, but we know that a top doesn't spin on its own. Hashem is a master planner, and nothing happens randomly. Our job is to constantly work on seeing the Divine hand behind every event that occurs, and for that we must rely on our Torah sources.

According to Rabbi Nochum Malinowitz, in his series of audio clips on bitachon, one of the most powerful ways to attain and maintain bitachon is by repeating pesukim of bitachon. The source for this idea is the Yerushalmi in Maseches Brochos, which says that there are two pesukim that should never leave a person's mouth:

Hashem tzvakos imanu misgav lanu Elokei Yaakov selah - Hashem, Master of Legions, is with us, protects us, & He is forever the G-d of Yaakov (Tehillim 46:8).
Hashem Tzvakos ashrei adam boteach bach - Hashem, praiseworthy is the person who lives with bitachon (Tehillim 84:13).

The Rishonim add a third passuk:
Hashem hosheah haMelech ya'aneinu b'yom koreinu - Hashem will save us & will answer us on the day we call out to Him (Tehillim 20:10).

According to Rabbi Malinowitz, the secret of bitachon and the secret of yeshuos is in the constant repeating of these pesukim. The word Tzvakos in the first two pesukim demonstrates that Hashem created millions and billions of creations, and they are all soldiers of Hashem, and are working for Him. It may seem that His creations are doing what they want, but in truth, Hashem is the General, the leader of all the various troops. They are not working on their own but are carrying out the will of Hashem.

Rabbi Malinowitz points out that in the first passuk Hashem is called the G-d of Yaakov. It does not say G-d of Yisroel, which is the name used when we are on a higher spiritual level. Even if we are on the lower level of Yaakov, and not necessarily doing what we are supposed to do, He is still our G-d "selah", forever. No matter where we are holding, Hashem will always take care of us.

We are all looking for ways to improve our avodas Hashem during the month of Elul. By incorporating these pesukim into our daily lives, we can show our Father that we have made a real effort in strengthening our bitachon, and are truly sincere in our efforts to become real servants of Hashem.

Please remember to say your Tehillim on Shabbos. You may check the Shabbos Tehillim spreadsheet if you are unsure which kappitlach you signed up for.
