Senate Bill 8, introduced in the Texas Senate on Friday, would create an education savings account (ESA) program that gives parents $8,000 per student to spend on a wide range of educational expenses, including private school tuition. Agudath Israel of America, a longtime supporter of school choice efforts in Texas and across the country, welcomes this proposal. Education savings accounts empower parents to make educational decisions that are in the best interest of their child – not limited by a family's finances. Authored by Senate Education Committee Chairman Brandon Creighton (R- Conroe) and eight other senators, the bill is the most expansive school choice proposal introduced this session and, if passed, would put Texas on the path to universal school choice. "Texas parents have waited for way too long," said Rabbi Ari Weisenfeld, Agudath Israel's associate national director of state relations. "Agudath Israel thanks Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick for making school choice a priority this legislative session and finally bringing educational freedom to the Lone Star State." Texas residents can urge their lawmaker to support education savings accounts for every child by going to agudah.org/texas-school-choice. Please join Agudath Israel of America and its coalition partners at the Texas School Choice Rally on Tuesday, March 21st, at 10:30 AM, at the Capitol in Austin.
