Hashem created the world and expected man to do his part in order for the world to reach its fullest, and in order for man to reap the benefits of the world.   However, there are 2 kinds of Hishtadlus.1) The pre-sin kind - which is a blessing. 2) The post-sin kind - which is a curse.   Let's explain   The Posuk (Bereishis 2:15) says: וַיִּקַּ֛ח ה' אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת הָֽאָדָ֑ם וַיַּנִּחֵ֣הוּ בְגַן עֵ֔דֶן לְעָבְדָ֖הּ וּלְשָׁמְרָֽהּ  - Hashem placed Adam in Gan Eden to work it and to guard it.   Clearly, there was some sort of "work – Hishtadlus" involved. What kind of work was it? A few Pesukim earlier (Berieshis 2:5) it states: וְכֹ֣ל שִׂ֣יחַ הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה טֶ֚רֶם יִֽהְיֶ֣ה בָאָ֔רֶץ וְכָל עֵ֥שֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה טֶ֣רֶם יִצְמָ֑ח כִּי֩ לֹ֨א הִמְטִ֜יר ה' אֱלֹהִים֙ עַל הָאָ֔רֶץ וְאָדָ֣ם אַ֔יִן לַֽעֲבֹ֖ד אֶת הָֽאֲדָמָֽה - No tree of the field was yet on the earth, neither did any grass grow, because Hashem had not brought rain upon the earth, and there was no man to work the soil. Again, we see that there was work involved for man to do.   Rashi explains: ומה טעם לֹא הִמְטִיר לפי שאדם אַיִן לַעֲבֹד אֶת הָאֲדָמָה ואין מכיר בטובתן של גשמים וכשבא אדם וידע שהם צורך לעולם התפלל עליהם וירדו וצמחו האילנות והדשאים It didn't rain because there as nobody to appreciate the kindness of rain. (When we don't appreciate something, we don't get it; or we lose it). When Adam arrived on the scene and realized that the world needed rain to grow and thrive, he davened and it began to rain and the trees and grass sprouted.   The "work" that was missing was prayer. WHAT A BLESSING!   Then Adam sinned. Now, Hashem placed the curse of (Bereishis 3:19) "בְּזֵעַ֤ת אַפֶּ֨יךָ֙ תֹּ֣אכַל לֶ֔חֶם, With the sweat of your face you shall eat bread" on mankind.   A new, more demanding kind of Hishtadlus now became a reality. THIS WAS A CURSE.   Each and every one of us must do this new kind of Hishtadlus. Not that the Hishtadlus brings the Parnassah; it doesn't. Hashem sends Parnassah, unrelated to our Hishtadlus. We must do Hishtadlus because it's a curse, a punishment, a penalty.   However, we still have a choice. How much Hishtadlus will we do?   Will we just do the minimum that is expected of us, and avoid self-inflicting ourselves with an extra dose of the curse?  Or will we work harder and sweat more than necessary, thinking – falsely- that more pain equals more gain?   The choice is ours. Will we strive to be connected to the original, pre- sin way of life, where reliance on Hashem via Bitachon and Tefilah reigns supreme, or will we be tempted to be a part of the serpent's world, where the false guise of self-reliance reigns supreme?   The choice is ours to make. We can choose Bitachon, Menuchas Hanefesh, Tefilah and total dependence on Hashem; the Gan Eden life.   Or we can choose to burn the midnight oil, live with stress and anxiety, overlook our spiritual obligations and depend on reaching the non-existent finish line of the rat-race; the serpent's life.   Yes, the choice is ours.
