Armed in a Bais Medrash
I am a yungerman in kollel in Yerushalayim and learn in a bais medrash where there are about 200 talmidim. There is one yungerman who owns and carries a gun, but right now he is in milu'im fighting the war in Gaza. I would like to apply for a permit to carry a gun and I was wondering if this is proper hishtadlus. Also, which activities should I avoid these days and what about my children attending cheder?
Rabbi Ohav Kahalany
Rav Auerbach:
In truth, our strongest weapon is prayer, as we say, "They come with chariots and horses and we come with the name of Hashem." I say that the three best weapons we own are Tehillim 121, 130, and 142. In the long run, tefillah is really what safeguards us.
This being said, considering what is going on around us, it is certainly within the realms of proper hishtadlus to carry a gun. My brother-in-law, Rav Zalman Nechemiah Goldberg zt"l, used to tell people, "If you have a door on your home, you can carry a gun. A door and a gun are the same type of hishtadlus, i.e., a deterrent so that terrorists do not harm you."
As far as which activities to avoid, that is a difficult question. Someone once asked my father-in-law, Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt"l, if he could purchase a home in the Arab Quarter of the Old City. Rav Elyashiv responded that this was fine as long as he and his family were not afraid.
In another instance, there was a girl who was a bas bayis by a certain family in the Neve Yaakov neighborhood of Yerushalayim. In order to get to their home, she had to pass, for a minute, an area where there were a lot of incidents with Arabs. Rav Elyashiv told her the same rule: Fear was a reason to avoid an activity, for fear brings on dinim.
As far as closing chadorim, I have told all the chadorim that are under my jurisdiction to remain open. The Torah and tefillah of these children are definitely a shemirah for us, and I see no reason to remove this great merit.
Rav Zafrani:
Every bullet and missile has an address, and one will not get hurt unless it has been nigzar Above for it to happen. Yet, all this being said, if a person is negligent in protecting himself, he is considered to have caused himself harm and has violated the Torah obligation of venishmarten me'od lenafshoseichem. Therefore, it is definitely proper at the current time that every bais medrash have at least one person with a gun.
Leaving Israel During the War and Strengthening Families Whose Children Perished and Are Missing
Question:
I am a yungerman from New York learning in kollel here in Yerushalayim. I really want to stay, but my wife's family is begging her to come home and she is traumatized by what is happening here in Israel. Should I stay or should I go back to the United States?
Also, I have close relative whose sons were at the music party where the massacre took place. One of them was killed and one of them is missing. What should I tell the family, who are not religious?
Rav Zafrani:
If you are asking me if you should stay or go, then the answer is that you should stay. The Chofetz Chaim said that Eretz Yisroel will be the safest place at the End of Days, which we are currently in.
Yet, at the same time, you have to be a sensitive husband, and if your wife is traumatized, then you are obligated to try and do everything in your power to get her out of that state. If this means going back to her family in the United States, then that is what you are meant to do.
As far as your relatives who were at the music festival, there is one thing you should know. It is not the correct Torah outlook to point a finger at them and say that they caused their own demise by being at such a festival on Simchas Torah. We have to take responsibility for the fact that such a party could be going on in Israel while we were completely oblivious of what was going on there and celebrating our Simchas Torah. You should give them chizuk in emunah, and strengthen them as much as you are able to in this difficult situation that they are undergoing, with one child being killed and another missing.
