| "Elokim be gracious to you, my son" (Bereishis 43:29). With these words, Yosef HaTzaddik eternally engraved the deep bond between the sons of Yaakov and their father. Yaakov blessed the tribes with chein, grace, as it says in Parshas Vayishlach: "the children whom Elokim has graciously granted your servant." At that time, Binyamin had not yet been born, so Yosef needed to bestow this blessing upon him - and that is what took place in our Parshah. In Torah 1, Rebbe Nachman teaches at length that Yaakov represents chochmah, wisdom. Chochmah is symbolized by the sun and associated with the letter ח. From it, everyone receives light through the moon - tefillah, which is associated with the letter נ. When these two are joined together, they form חן (chein). When a person merits chein, all of his tefillos and requests—both spiritual and physical—are accepted. Chochmah represents the bechorah, the firstborn status, and what connects it to malchus, represented by the letter נ, is berachah. (It is worthwhile to study the original teaching to grasp the depth of these concepts.) The Jewish people were blessed by Yaakov, and that blessing was completed by Yosef, enabling them to merit this chein. But in order for this to happen, a person must look at everything with true understanding. There exist in the world immense forms of intellect whose entire purpose is to distance a person from the Creator. When one is drawn after them, chein falls into the realm of the sitra achra, and it becomes extremely difficult to escape this false charm. For this reason, we need the tzaddik - Yosef. Yosef lived as a ruler over the entire world, fully involved in everything that was happening, yet he knew clearly that all of this was false chein. True chein exists only in the Torah. When we believe in the tzaddik and in his guidance, and when we cry out again and again in simple tefillah, we gain the ability to despise false chein and merit true chein. Chanukah is a powerful example of this: all the great intellectual systems and Greek philosophies were nullified as if they never existed, and the true chein was revealed within the Jewish people.
