Week 1 Focus:

דיני ירושה על פי התורה

  • YERUSHAH OF A SPOUSE
  • THE ORDER OF YERUSHAH
  • DESCENDANTS OF THE YORSHIM
  • THE DOUBLE INHERITANCE OF A BECHOR
  • BANK ACCOUNTS, BONDS, AND STOCKS
  • LIFE INSURANCE AND YERUSHAH

Introduction

The Torah delineates a very specific order of inheritance, with the designated heir(s) receiving the

entire estate. The designated heirs divide the estate equally, with the exception of a firstborn son who

receives a double share.

Points to Ponder

Does the wife or the daughters of the deceased get a share in the inheritance?

• If the deceased had one son and one daughter, but his son predeceased him and left behind a daughter.

Who receives the inheritance, the daughter or the granddaughter?

• Does the oldest son have the status of a bechor if his mother had a miscarriage prior to his birth?

• The Torah limits the double portion of the bechor to assets that were in the possession of the deceased at

the time of death. How does this affect the status of money in a bank account?
