CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD PDF BRI TORAH TIDBITS Baruch HaShem, we merited to be part of the holy gathering in Uman on the holiest day—Rosh HaShanah—the day when we crown HaShem as King. On this day, we nullify our own personal sovereignty before His honor and show that our deepest desire is to return kingship to Him. Rebbe Nachman describes this in Torah 1 as the nullification of the "nun" (which represents the heart) into the "chet" (which represents the mind)—transforming the heart, which is filled with personal desires and temptations, into a state of helplessness, like a small child whose only strength is in prayer. This prayer connects us to wisdom—the power of Torah. Just as the light of the moon is nullified before the light of the sun, so too in Uman we stand together in total surrender to the honor of HaShem. From there we enter the Ten Days of Teshuvah, crying out and pleading until Yom Kippur, when the yetzer hara is completely subdued and loses its power to accuse. When we merit this kind of bitul before HaShem, the light of the moon becomes like the light of the sun. This is the reason we sanctify the new moon after Yom Kippur—to show that it has reached its fullness and perfection. May it be HaShem's will that, through the power of prayer, we nullify all selfhood and merit a true and complete teshuvah.
