| "They did not listen to Moshe because of shortness of spirit and hard labor." (Shemot 6:9) At times, when we read the words of Rebbe Nachman, we are struck by how simple and accessible his paths in serving HaShem are—avodot that do not require great expense or extreme effort, yet have the power to repair everything. Examples include the Tikkun HaKlali, hisbodedus, and the like. We sometimes struggle to understand how something so simple can rectify such great damage that we may have caused. Rebbe Nachman explains this in Likutey Moharan, Tinyana, Torah 86. When a person lacks faith, the rectification indeed requires difficult avodah—fasts, afflictions, and harsh forms of self-discipline. But when a person has faith in the tzaddik, and fulfills his guidance with simple sincerity, empowered by that faith, the rectification comes about properly and naturally. When faith is weak—as we see in this week's parashah, "They did not listen to Moshe"—the Torah explains the reason: shortness of spirit, meaning a deficiency in faith. Because of that lack, they were forced to endure hard labor. May it be HaShem's will that we merit to fulfill the holy counsel of Rebbe Nachman with complete simplicity and faith, and through this merit that we go out of exile speedily in our days. Amen.
