The FDA just recalled about 40,000 cases of tater tots—here's what you need to know

If you're a fan of tater tots, then it's time to check your fridge or freezer for a critical recall.

On December 3, 2025, McCain Foods USA Inc. issued a voluntary recall of nearly 40,000 cases of Ore-Ida Tater Tots and Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrels. And, on January 6, 2026, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reclassified the recall as Class II. Here's what you need to know.

What products are being recalled?

McCain Foods is recalling approximately 38,853 cases of both its Ore-Ida Tater Tots and Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrels.

The Ore-Ida Tater Tots, which make up about 21,256 cases, each have a 30-pound net weight. They also have the following information:

• Item number: OIF00215A
• UPC: 1 00 72714 00215 8
• Batch codes: 1005479808, 1005477924, 1005478883, 1005480444, 1005480875, 1005481627, and 1005481770

Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrels make up the rest of the recall, at 17,597 cases. It comes in six, 5-pound bags and includes the following information:

• Item number: 1000006067
• UPC: 1 07 34730 62740 0
• Batch codes: 1005482717, 1005483735, 1005484702, 1005485462, and 1005485660

Why was this recall initiated?

The cases of frozen tater tots were recalled over concerns that they may contain "clear hard plastic fragments," according to the FDA, which may pose a safety hazard.
