In order to understand an important point made by the Kehillas Yaakov and others, a short introduction is in order. Chazal teach us that before going to war each of the soldiers of King David's army gave a “get”, a divorce, to his wife. This was done to avoid “aguna” situations if one of the soldiers became MIA. If a husband would be MIA, without having given a divorce before leaving to war, his wife would most likely never be able to remarry. According to Rabbeinu Tam, the divorce document given before departing to war was given unconditionally. Subsequent to giving such a divorce, just as seclusion between any Jewish male and female is generally prohibited, the former husband and wife could not be secluded.. For technical reasons, if the husband and wife would become secluded, the validity of the divorce can be thrown into question. With this background information in the forefront of our minds, we can now understand what was going on in Urya's mind in our chapter.
