Subject: [chicago-aneinu] Talking To Our Children About Tragedy

We are shaken and heartbroken over the news of the tragic accident that occurred last night in our community.

As parents, you have the additional responsibility of helping your children - which can be daunting at this time. To help ease that burden, we, at Madraigos Midwest, would like to offer some guidelines on how to speak with your children about this tragedy.

  • Talk to your children directly. Children will learn about this event from other sources which can lead to additional confusion, anxiety, and fear.

  • Use age-appropriate facts and encourage questions. It is okay to acknowledge that adults don't have all the answers and that the unknown can feel frightening.

  • It is important to validate children's pain and confusion. An initial obsession in talking about the tragedy may actually be a sign of the child's need to process this event and should not be cause for concern. Do not discourage children from talking about it.

  • Model healthy coping strategies and share why they feel helpful to you.

  • Maintain daily routines as much as possible. It is important to normalize that it is okay to feel happy and sad at the same time. Being happy does not take away from the sadness you feel for the victim, his family, or his friends.

  • Nervousness and restlessness are normal responses to such a jarring situation. Check in with your child daily over the next few days to see how he or she is feeling.

  • If your child continues to have ongoing difficulties with sleep, changes in appetite, or fears of being alone, reach out for help.

  • It can be helpful to encourage your children to take on acts of kindness. This can help them create meaning as well as regain some level of control by responding in a proactive manner.

The clinical staff at Madraigos Midwest's Mozes and Helen Stern Counseling Center is available for consultation. If you have any questions or concerns about your child please reach out.

May Hashem comfort the family and our entire community and speedily turn this time of painful mourning into days of everlasting joy.
