22,000 Pairs of Tzitzis for Soldiers

Question:
Last week, in Har Nof, a group of us got together and prepared 22,000 pairs of tzitzis for soldiers. The women cut the fabric to the right size and the men tied the tzitzis. There were a lot more women involved than men, and had women been able to tie the tzitzis, we could have probably finished faster and maybe even made more tzitzis. Is there any heter for women to tie tzitzis?

Thank you.
S. K.

Rav Zafrani:
It was a wonderful mitzvah that you did on many counts, including: (1) There is no better shemirah (protection) for the soldiers than wearing tzitzis. (2) Preparing these tzitzis most definitely raises the morale and shows that people are really thinking about them. (3) It is kiruv rechokim, for it brings the soldiers closer to mitzvah observance. (4) It is excellent to do things right now that are me'acheid, that unite, the Jewish people.
As far as your question goes, mei'ikkar hadin, according to the letter of the law, there is no reason that women cannot tie tzitzis; only a non-Jew is forbidden from tying them. However, Rabbeinu Tam (Gittin 45b) learned from the halachos of tefillin that just as a woman cannot write tefillin because she is not obligated to wear tefillin, so too, she may not tie tzitzis, because she is not obligated to wear them. This is also the opinion of the Maharam and some other Ashkenazi Rishonim.
The Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim 14:3) rules that women may tie tzitzis, but the Rama cites the opinion of the Rishonim that women should not tie them. Some Sefardi poskim follow the stringent ruling of the Rama (Kaf Hachaim 14:3).
However, I can suggest the following. The Torah obligation to tie tzitzis is fulfilled when one puts the tzitzis through the hole of the garment and ties a knot to hold them in. Afterwards, all of the krichios, the wrappings that we do, are just a minhag. Under these circumstances, when you are involved with such an importat mitzvah as tying tzitzis for soldiers, if a man was to tie the initial knot on the four corners of the tizitzis, I would permit a woman to finish the job.
May you have great siyata diShmaya in all your endeavors.

DNA Testing on Shabbos

Question
I am sure that the rov is aware that one of the biggest issues in times of war is making sure that the wives of soldiers do not become agunos. There is a new technology through which a fallen soldier can be tested immediately through a DNA test. I was wondering if it is permitted to do this on Shabbos.
Thank you.
M. Z.

Rav Zafrani:
I am very supportive of anything that can be done to make sure that women do not become agunos. As far as this test is concerned, the first issue that must be analyzed is how it is performed. If it involves the violation of a Torah prohibition, I do not believe that we can permit chillul Shabbos de'Oraisa for this.
I am assuming that blood must be taken from the body to do this. This involves the Torah prohibition of mefareik. However, if this procedure can be done by two people, then I would permit it on the grounds of shnayim she'asu. As long as the prohibition involved is derabbonon, for the sake of saving agunos we would certainly permit this.

Bread on the Front Lines

Question:
I am a soldier fighting in Gaza. I would like to know what the optimal way is for me to eat bread during the war.
Thank you.
M. S. M.

Rav Zafrani:
It is to your great merit that you are concerned with dikduk halacha in times such as these. The Shulchan Aruch exempts a soldier from netilas yodayim before eating bread. Technically, one would have to perform netilas yodayim – mayim acharonim – after bread, because this involves sakanah. Yet, since our salt today is not dangerous, you are exempt from this as well.
May Hashem guard you from all danger and give you brocha v'hatzlocha in all your endeavors.

Shemoneh Esrei During an Air Raid Siren

Question:
What should I do if I hear an air riad siren while I am davening Shemoneh Esrei?
Thank you.
Paula Weinberg

Rav Zafrani:
You should try and complete the brocha you are currently reciting. Afterwards, you should go to the air raid shelter and continue where you left off.
