THIS MONTH'S YORUCHA TOPIC:

 Yichud & Gender Issues

יחוד והרחקה מעריות

Week 3 Focus:

פרטי דיני יחוד

  • MULTIPLE MEN AND WOMEN
  • ONE KASHER AND ONE PARUTZ
  • WHO IS A PARUTZ?
  • POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO YICHUD PROBLEMS
  • USING A CHILD AS A SHOMER
  • USING A SHOMER AT NIGHT
  • VIDEO CAMERAS
  • THE SHIUR OF YICHUD

Introduction

The connotation of yichud implies the seclusion of a few people for a certain amount of time. Once

there is a crowd, the issur of yichud would normally fall away. In some cases, the presence of specific

individuals, i.e., a shomer, suffices to remove the yichud designation.

Points to Ponder

• How many men are required to remove a situation of yichud? How many women?

• If a man is in one room and a woman is in another with a locked door between them, is it

still considered yichud?

• In a situation that would otherwise be yichud, which individuals can be brought in to serve as a shomer?

• Do video cameras suffice to remove the issur of yichud? Does it matter whether they can be viewed live

or only after the fact?
