This summer, Max participated in Next Step, NCSY's internship program in Israel, and gradually grew more connected to the mitzvah of wrapping tefillin. As part of continuing the legacy of a fallen hero, NCSY gifted him a pair of tefillin in memory of IDF soldier Ari Zenilman, Hy"d. In a heartfelt letter to Ari's parents, Max wrote: "While I didn't have the privilege of meeting your son, he's helped shape the person I want to be… Tefillin, to me, means never forgetting I'm Jewish – ever again."
