"And it shall be, because you will listen… HaShem your G-d will safeguard you, love you, and increase you…" (Devarim 7:12) "The 'light' mitzvos that a person tramples under his heel" (Rashi). Have you ever considered how essential dancing is in Avodas HaShem? Reb Avraham the son of Reb Nachman of Tulchin, in his sefer Kochvey Or, explains that this is the inner meaning of what Rebbe Nachman teaches in Likutey Moharan II, Torah 169 (Vehayah eikev tishma'un): when we bring joy into our very heels, and literally dance in order to attain the joy of a mitzvah, we merit a special siyata diShmaya - that HaShem will safeguard the holy covenant for us. In our generation, there are no spiritual pitfalls more severe than breaches in this area. And the only true remedy is simchas mitzvah - joy in serving HaShem. Precisely because of this, it can be hard for us to simply believe that this is really what is being asked of us: to dance, and dance, and dance again. Of course, it should be done in a way that won't push people away - but it's so simple to take a friend's hand after davening and dance out of pure joy that we merited to pray Shacharis, or during the day, when we feel sadness creeping in, to simply compel ourselves to dance. This is the deeper meaning of Rashi's words, "that a person tramples with his heel" - we do not realize the immense power contained in such joy. It can lift us out of blemishes to the covenant, and give us the strength to withstand all the trials and spiritual challenges of our time. Try it - and you will see. Hatzlachah! Shabbat Shalom |
