"Hashem's Hashgachah pratit accompanied us constantly," Yosef Chaim relates. "At some point, the terrorists brought us an old radio. They thought we'd only be able to get Arab stations and the muezzin, but with a few wires and iron rods we managed to build an antenna and pick up Galei Tzahal (Army Radio).

"For a whole month we listened without the terrorists noticing, and we finally got some news from Israel. And then one day, I suddenly heard my father's voice. He was speaking words of emunah, and I felt that Hashem had sent me a special gift. Then the host asked him if he wanted to send a message to his son, and my father said: 'Yosef Chaim, be strong. Know that Hashem is watching over you, and all of Am Yisrael is praying for you. Very soon, you'll be home.'

"It's impossible to describe what that did to me. After hearing it, I literally danced in the tunnel from joy. The chance that my father would happen to speak on the one station we managed to pick up, at the exact time we were listening, was one in a million. It was a ray of light that helped us endure that terrible period."

Fw: [-aneinu] Agudath Israel of Illinois Condemns Passage of Assisted Suicide

Agudath Israel of Illinois Condemns Passage of Assisted Suicide Legislation

After 2:00 AM this morning, the Illinois Senate voted to pass SB 1950, the "End of Life Options Act," legislation that would allow physicians, upon request of a patient, to prescribe lethal drugs to individuals whom two doctors believe have six months or less to live. The bill now advances to Governor JB Pritzker for his consideration.

As an Orthodox Jewish organization, Agudath Israel of Illinois stands firmly upon the principle that all human life is sacred and invaluable. Legalizing physician-assisted suicide risks diminishing our society's respect for life and can encourage vulnerable individuals to feel their lives may not be worth sustaining.

Agudath Israel has long advocated for the dignity and care of the terminally ill. Through its work, AIOI has seen how easily the elderly and terminally ill can be marginalized within the healthcare system. Additionally, factors such as depression, along with family pressures, and even financial concerns can push patients into making irreversible decisions they would not otherwise choose.

Rabbi Shlomo Soroka, Director of Government Affairs for Agudath Israel of Illinois, expressed profound disappointment following the vote: "It is tragic to see elected leaders pass legislation that aims to diminish the infinite value of human life. For those dealing with the emotional anguish of losing their autonomy, independence, dignity, feeling depressed or hopeless, we should be expanding palliative care options and strengthening social supports rather than providing a means to terminate life. We urge Governor Pritzker to veto this bill and reaffirm our state's commitment to valuing and protecting life at every stage."

Tell us a little bit about your family:

I'm married to Avital with 4 kids.

What is your favorite memory/(memories) from FYHS/HTC/Kayitz: On our senior trip, we had a kumzitz, and in a moment of inspiration, I decided to switch from attending the University of Maryland to YU to be in a more Torah environment. Also, my senior year, I moved into Ben Jacobson's house in West Rogers Park to work on the Purim shpiel and yearbook for 3 months, and the dorm counselors didn't even notice!.

Please share a lesson/takeaway from your time at FYHS/HTC/Kayitz:The investment the Rebbeim put into the students is very special. There is a strong bond with the Yeshiva guys wherever we end up. Even here in Cleveland, we have that group of alumni that is talking about the Yeshiva with pride.

Advice for current students:

Take advantage of your time at the Yeshiva and get close to the rebbeim. I'm still in touch with many of them.

Divrei Torah from Alumni and Rebbeim

Avraham's Mission

By Reuven Kirshner

Adam failed to listen to Hashem and was banished from Gan Eden. Noach was a tzaddik but failed to help other people find Hashem. He was saved due to his righteousness, but the world was not. The world was reborn, but Noach's piety didn't last and he became an אִישׁ אֲדָמָ, focusing on his vineyards more than his connection to Hashem. Most people in those 20 or so generations were mentioned to have lived and died without accomplishing anything worth noting, until Avraham.

Hagar's Ordeal

By Rabbi Chaim Twerski

As we learn about Hagar's relationship with Sarah, several questions arise. 1) One must wonder how such a righteous woman as Sarah had it within her to cause her maidservant to suffer so much that she had to flee from her home. 2) Why did the angel refer to her as "the maidservant of Sarah" after addressing her by name? 3) Why did the angel ask her where she was coming from and where she was going? The angel surely knew this. 4) Why did the angel tell her to return only to suffer under Sarah?
