| Once again, Israel dominates the headlines. But this time, it feels fundamentally different. In this week's Torah portion, we read about Abraham's first revelation — when G-d tells him, "To your descendants I will give this land." This promise of the Land of Israel was made thousands of years before the Balfour Declaration, and long before 1948. It was not granted by any government or international body, it was given directly by G-d Himself. We then read that it was King David who served as the architect, and his son, King Solomon, who became the builder of the Holy Temple, not in Cairo, not in Istanbul, not in Yemen, not in Tehran nor in Saudi Arabia, but only in Jerusalem. Jerusalem, the city of King David's reign, was chosen as the eternal dwelling place of the Divine Presence, the very place promised by G-d to Abraham. It is not merely a geographic location; it is the spiritual heart of our people, the center of our faith, and the symbol of our eternal covenant with G-d. Yes, our connection to the Land of Israel has been challenged throughout history — by the Romans, the Greeks, and many others who sought to erase our presence. Yet, today it seems that a new threat has arisen: a group of bloodthirsty terrorists, along with some misguided voices even in modern-day America and Europe, who try to convince the world that the history and rights of our people do not matter. But the truth cannot be erased. Our claim to this land is not based on politics, treaties, or temporary governments. It is rooted in millennia of history, in the Torah, in the leadership of Abraham, King David, and King Solomon, and in the enduring presence of our people in Jerusalem. As we reflect on this week's Torah portion, we are reminded that the Land of Israel is not just a place on a map. It is the fulfillment of G-d's promise, the center of our spiritual heritage, and a living testimony to the resilience and continuity of the Jewish people. No force, past or present, can sever the bond between the Jewish people and their eternal homeland. Washington should not be divided and Israel and Jerusalem cannot be divided. Am Yisroel Chai! |
