SNAP at Risk: A Statement from The Ark

Dear Friends,

For the first time since government safety net programs were enacted 60 years ago, on November 1 the federal government will pause SNAP benefits (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps) across the country. This change will directly impact 1.9 million people in Illinois who rely on this vital program to put food on the table. At The Ark, we know the impact will be immediate and profound for the Jewish community we serve.

One in five Jewish households in the Chicagoland area struggles to make ends meet, and each year, 3,200 individuals and families depend on The Ark's food pantries for kosher food and household essentials. Nearly 70 percent of these households also receive SNAP benefits. Government benefits are the most significant factor helping individuals emerge from economic vulnerability, even with the support of human service agencies like The Ark.

The Ark is here in this moment of uncertainty and remains committed to our mission to partner with each Chicagoland Jew on their path to self-reliance. Our case managers are working closely with clients to navigate these unprecedented circumstances.

We cannot do it alone.

We must rely on the compassion of those who care deeply about helping our neighbors in need. You can make a difference today.

Click the button below to keep our pantry shelves stocked for those who will turn to us in the coming weeks and at any time.

Thank you for standing with us and with every member of our community who needs support right now.

Shabbat Shalom,

Marna Goldwin
Chief Executive Officer

The Ark is a vibrant hub of vital human services, empowered by Jewish values, that lifts and strengthens the Jewish community.

Community-funded. A partner with the Jewish United Fund in serving our community.
